This report indicates the UN and NGO partner response to continuing humanitarian needs and early recovery concerns, in support to the Sri Lankan Government’s efforts to rebuild the former conflict-affected regions. Activities show progress towards the sectoral priorities and goals described in the 2011 Joint Plan for Assistance.
I. SITUATION OVERVIEW & HIGHLIGHTS
IDP returns and resettlement during March-April 2012: Relatively few returns during the reporting period. Nearly 400 IDPs (111 families) returned from host communities to their areas of origin in Maritimepattu and Puthukkudiyiruppu Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSD), in the Mullaitivu district.
Also, some 40 long-term IDPs returned to Trincomalee district. No return movements took place from Menik Farm.
In total, by 30 April 2012, an estimated 445,212 IDPs (133,152 families) had returned to Northern and Eastern Provinces during the prior three years. This figure includes some 229,227 people (72,622 families) displaced after April 2008 and 215,985 persons (60,530 families) displaced before April 20081. This left 6,063 IDPs (1,805 families), displaced after April 2008, in camps awaiting return to their areas of origin. An additional 7,302 IDPs (1,968 families) from the protracted caseload, displaced prior to April 2008, remained in welfare centers in Jaffna and Vavuniya districts.
